Facts of OSCAR

Facts of OSCAR

The first awards were presented on May 16, 1929 at a private dinner in Hollywood, with an audience of less than 250 people. Since the first year the awards have been publicly broadcast, at first by radio then by TV after 1953. During the first decade the results were given to newspapers for publication at 11 p.m. on the night of the awards. This method was ruined when the Los Angeles Times announced the winners before the ceremony began; as a result the Academy has since used a sealed envelope to reveal the name of the winners. Since 2002, the awards have been broadcast from the Kodak Theatre.

The official name of the Oscar statuette is the Academy Award of Merit. It takes about a week-and-a-half to create each Academy Award, made of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base, it is 13.5 in (34 cm) tall, weighs 8.5 lb (3.85 kg) and depicts a knight rendered in Art Deco style holding a crusader's sword standing on a reel of film with five spokes. The five spokes each represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians. The figurines cost an estimated $18,000, but are "worth millions to the recipients," says Scott Siegel, president of R.S. Owens.

Each statuette takes 40 hours of work to make. Once the plating is completed, the Oscar figure is screwed onto its metal base. Each statuette also is numbered. The academy began numbering statuettes in 1949, starting with No. 501. About 50 to 60 trophies are made every year in Chicago under tight security by manufacturer R.S. Owens & Company. The Oscar statuette presented to each winner is made in Chicago of gold-plated britannium, a metal alloy. The origins of the nickname "Oscar" are not clear, according to the Academy's website More than 6,000 members of the Academy - including actors, directors, producers, studio executives, composers and behind-the-cameras crew - cast secret ballots to determine the Oscar winners. Representatives from accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers count the votes and place the winners' names in sealed envelopes. They are not opened until Oscar night.

THE WORDS

(This is the speech of Resul Pookutty when he received the Oscar Award)

Resul Pookutty:
This is unbelievable. We can't believe this. Ladies and gentlemen... sorry... I share the stage with two magicians, you know, who created the very ordinary sounds of Bombay, the cacophony of Bombay, into a soul-stirring, artful resonance called Slumdog Millionaire.

I come from a country and a civilization that given the universal word. That word is preceded by silence, followed by more silence. That word is "Om." So I dedicate this award to my country. Thank you, Academy, this is not just a sound award, this is history being handed over to me. My sincere and deepest gratitude to my teachers, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, Paul Ritchie, Pravesh... and everybody who has contributed to this film, Glenn Freemantle and all the sound mixers. I dedicate this to you guys. Thank you, Academy. Thank you very much.

Hoax Mails

Its surprising (and irritating) to see how hoax e-mails are being circulated. I get at the least 3 mails per day with a "Fwd: x n" in the subject line...

I don't understand how people fall for such things and forward it to their list... I mean who'll pay some crippled orphan person money for someone else forwarding mails, that too on various servers?? If there are stupid world record signature mails.. where will they go? to whom will they reach... who'll decide what number of people have to put in their name... how do you know one person hasn't put in 5 names..

In my free time i like to checkup these hoaxes by copy pasting the material on google or checking out hoax-slayer.com
Check out this link for the latest updates: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/latest-information.html

And here's the mail I got today... I wish AOL were as generous to me..
This is how it ends...

Nirosha Silva
(I know you don't like to forward mails. I am really sorry to bother you. If you have a heart and like to help a family, please forward this mail. Every time you forward this it will add 5 cents per email ID to AOL and they will deposit it into my bank account. Which will help me save my husband.)

My Dreams...............

We all have dreams, isn’t.....
I dream of beautiful things....
I dream of love not just the word it means
I dream of a world where there is no war
I dream of flying in the sky freely
I dream of a man who never scolds me
I dream of my country to be the best in all
I dream of the eternal life with happiness
I dream of my exam with no questions
I dream to become the world’s best person
I dream of sleeping when all I want to be
Ok, now its reality time...
Leaving all dreams behind
Because I live in a world with no human consideration

Sometimes I feel lost when he scolds me
But I know it’s for me...
I will keep on dreaming till my last
But when my dream comes true, I will share....
Yes, to share the happiness will make me happy
Do support me in all my dreams
When u see me sleeping.....
Don’t disturb me, I’m dreaming for you too.....

SOME PHOTOS OF WAGAH GATE FLAG HOSTING CEREMONY
LETS BE PROUD OF THE INDIAN ARMY

NOON OR MIDNIGHT
12PM "Technically speaking," neither noon nor midnight can be a.m. or p.m.
"Technically speaking" you are correct -- noon is not post meridian. However, since 12:00:01 is post meridian (or 12:00:00.01, for that matter), it makes more sense to say that 12:00:00 is post meridian for consistency's sake (or else you would have both PM and AM in the same 12 o'clock hour). Similarly midnight could be classified as BOTH PM and AM, because it is equidistant from the meridian. But classifying it as PM would produce the same confusion (i.e., 12:00 PM followed by 12:01 AM).
The real confusion among those who don't bother to tell time properly, is that people would rather have 1 through 12 (in a row) all be AM, then 1 through 12 all be PM. While this is a common error, it is less confusing if you consider that the hours should really be 0:00 through 11:59, and there should be no 12 o'clock hour whatsoever.
And some folks will claim that 24-hundred hours (24:00) is the same time as zero hours (00:00). No wonder to get confused - or frustrated - or are either very early or very late for an appointment. Ever notice what appears on your digital alarm clock if you set the time to "midnight?"
What do "YOU" think? Getting mad, yes when you think too much you will get mad.

TURBULENT HISTORY
Hundreds of people have died from the effects of toxic gases which leaked from a chemical factory near the central Indian city of Bhopal. The accident happened in the early hours of December 3rd 1984 at the American-owned Union Carbide Pesticide Plant in Bhopal.
The plant released 42 tons
A ton or metric ton , also referred to as a metric tonne, is a measurement of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms, or 2204.6226 pounds....s of toxic methyl isocynade
Methyl isocyanate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C2H3NO, arranged as H3C-N=C=O. Synonyms are isocyanatomethane, methyl carbylamine, and MIC.... (MIC) gas, exposing more than 500,000 people to toxic gases. The first official immediate death toll was 2,300. A more probable figure is that 8,000 died within two weeks, and it is estimated that an additional 8,000 have since died from gas-related diseases.
The Bhopal disaster is frequently cited as the world's worst industrial disaster...
